Preschool Shoshin: Lessons in Beginner's Mind from Beginners
In the course of my career, I spend an inordanate ammount of time around children who are just discovering object permanence, reltive scale, morality, and other things we as adults tend to (silly us) take for granted. Here, for you to chew on, is a small collection of experiences and quotes from my time with Beginners that gave me moments of clarity. If you have some of your own, I would love to hear them.
S, age 4: "..Daddy kept sayin the wrong thing and Mommy kept sayin the right thing" Me: "How did you know?" "Daddy was yellin an Mommy wasn't."
S, age 3: "What town are we in?" Me: "B_ _ _, CT" Lng Pause. Frown. "I know Flor'da's round here somewhere."
Z, age 3: Paints a remarkable picture. Rips it to shreds as soon as it dries. Is very proud of herself. Gifts me a piece.
B, age 3: We watch baby fish. "Arl, what's that?" Points to water. "The water is full of sparkles" Sun reflects.
