The question was asked innocently enough: “Are you still meditating?”
The context was obvious. You just had a baby, you’ve been very busy with work, your life must be turned upside-down. Given that, are you able to find a few minutes a day to sit quietly?
The short, honest answer is: No, I have not been sitting regularly. Try as I may, I’m either rushing out the door for work, or being stay-at-home-dad, depending on the day, and twenty minutes of quiet is not to be found with any consistency.
Ironically, the question was asked during a leisurely stroll through the park, stroller wheeling along, part of a nearly two-hour daily ritual I embark on when free for the morning. Normally, it’s just me and my very small son, and we walk in silence, aware of every bump and twig in our path, breathing steadily, enjoying the calm of Central Park’s endless marvels. In this time I am probably more aware, alive and in tune with what “is” than at any other time during the day.
And so I wondered: am I meditating?
