"Some Westerners have misinterpreted the second-turning teachings on shunyata as nihilistic. If all things are empty, it is mistakenly thought, then nothing has any value and everything is finally meaningless. Why bother to be a decent human being? Why pursue a piritual path? As we shall see below, such an interpretation of shunyata could not be more mistaken. The teachings on emptiness reveal that it is our own ego-centered, self-serving versions of reality that are empty of validity, not realisty itself. Once this emptiness is realized, the true beauty and value of the world may be seen and the boundless compassion that exists withing each person may be released."
