I Fear IDP's Touch the Earth Party!

I fear it.  Yep, that's right, the IDP Touch the Earth party

I completely suck at socializing.  I do a little bit of audio editing and blogging for IDP, but ask me to do a little bit of networking and socializing, and I don't know what I am doing.  I completely freeze up.  Yes, I can get to the room.  Yes, I can look at my fear upon approach.  Yes, I can even live in the now of the party, but, I'm telling you, F-R-O-Z-E-N.  I don't know what I'm supposed to do at these things.  Say hello to people?  Why?  Ask some questions?  What questions?  Eat food and just be there, and look at the paralysis?  All well and good, but why?  It doesn't sound like a good time to me.

I am going to go, though, because there is dancing, and because I believe and support IDP.  Mostly, though, I am going to go because I want YOU to go too.

When I thought about sharing this fear of mine with you, I also thought about my ability to do this one thing that is so precious, but so difficult to do:  dance-however-the-hell-I-feel-I-want-to.  More:  dance-to-move-from-one-moment-to-the-next-in-celebration-of-being-able-to-make-any-choice-at-all.  Here's the schedule so you know when we will be able to do this thing:

Spring Food Bar and Live Jazz from 7 til 8 pm (finger food and drinks thereafter)

Presentation from 8 til 8:45 pm

Dancing from 8:45 til 10:30 pm

Some of you reading this might want to skip the 8:45 - 10:30 pm part of the evening, I know it.  But I want you to stay.  I will be dancing with many other lovely friendly people, in an environment of people completely ready to support you and love you.  Dancing is easy; you move however you want.  You cannot do that with conversation; conversation must make sense (practically).  Music has to have form (practically).  Dancing does not have to be anything but what you want, even if what you want is to sit in the middle of the floor hugging your knees.  That's ok too.

I want you to come!  IDP needs your support to meet its goals!

And, I want you to dance freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

P.S.  (I'm still scared.)

P.S.S  There is a class devoted to fear at IDP that is going on this week.

P.S.S.S.  I'm even scared of dancing.

I'm afraid too!

Great post Robert, thank you for sharing.

I'm afraid too, of everything falling apart and the party not happening perfectly.   I'm afraid that I won't be able to be graceful to friends and guests AND be on top of running the program smoothly all at the same time.

I'll be there watching the fear and anxiety rise and fall with you -- and I hope that once the dancing starts, the structures and worries can really fall away and we can all just be with each other in the space in whatever way makes the most sense for each of us.

"How did you hear about the party?" is a also a good starter too -- as some folks might not be Buddhist, or meditators.

See ya on tha floor.

Oooo.

Oooo.  I love that question:  "How did you come to Buddhism?"  Perhaps asking about personal practice, etc, would be a good conversation piece while there.  We'll see.  Cheers!

The Questions

Remember how in school the question everybody asked everybody at parties was, "So, what's your major?"  Then in adulthood everybody asks everybody, "So, what’s your job?"  Both variations on, "Who are you?"  (well, at least in America)

In this community, it seems the equivalent question is, “So how did you come to Buddhism?”  It’s not a bad question.  It's a starting place.  Everyone has their story, and they’re each illuminating.

As to why?  Because everyone has their story, and they’re each illuminating.  (heh.)  Conversation creates community, and community gives us reason to get up in the morning.

Dancing helps, too.
