In Buddhism, the Sangha (assembly or community) is considered as important to the spiritual path as the Buddha and his teachings. Without the support of others, it is considered much more difficult to practice and nurture the qualities of awakening. Can this be true? In a society which places a high value on the idea of "independence", do we really need to be part of a group?

So often, the activity of life involves filling up space with things to do-- washing, cleaning, planning, yelling, and all that. The core of buddhist teachings state that the fundamental make-up of all phenomena is space, and that there is no independent, solid entity which is separate from space.
