We often find ourselves confronting life situations that seem both illogical and unsolvable. We want to do the “right thing” but more often than not our logical decisions only lead to more complications and unhappiness. Once we think our way out of one difficult situation we find ourselves bogged down in another one.
Koans are paradoxical questions used in Zen practice to help us reach a deeper level of understanding. The correct answers are never arrived out through rational thinking so engaging in these real life riddles help people to reach a deeper level of wisdom that leads to more happiness and peace of mind.
You don’t have to be a Zen Master to develop the same kind of wisdom used in Koan study. Join Zen priest Lawrence Grecco for a unique and humorous dharma talk about how to approach your life in a way that enables clarity, appropriate choices, and a direct experience of the world.

Rev. Lawrence Grecco is a Buddhist Minister and Life Coach.
He is an authorized dharma teacher with Interdependence Project and has worked with people for over twenty years in several capacities including crisis counselor, meditation instructor, certified personal trainer, and hospice volunteer. Lawrence lives in New York City and was ordained by the International Order of Buddhist Ministers/Los Angeles Buddhist Union.
Rev. Lawrence is a student of Paul Yuánzhì Lynch, the Founder and Guiding Teacher of Five Mountain Zen Order and holds a certificate in Foundations in Buddhist Chaplaincy from the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care. He writes for the ID Project, the Buddhist Dispatch and his own blog, Open Sky Zen.
Lawrence is the Founding Director and main teacher of Open Sky, a meditation and dharma studies group that meets several times a month at the IDP. He has taught mediation to at-risk and incarcerated teenagers through the Lineage Project, offered spiritual care at a hospice facility, and worked for many years as a crisis counselor with the Long Island Crisis Center. In 1985 he confounded LIGALY, a youth support group where he served as Co-Director until 1992.
Wednesday Night Open Talks are a great introduction to Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to meditate in a supportive group setting. Drop by and discover how the principles of meditation can be applied to everyday life while uniting with other practitioners in a receptive and welcoming environment.
