What does it mean to be free? What are the teachings and practices that lead to real, lasting freedom?
All are invited to "Find Liberation" in this four-week series where you will learn the foundational components of Buddhism's amazing array of philosophies, ethics, and practical approach to living life.
There will be reading and homework assignments before each class. You'll also get clear and precise meditation instruction, and an invitation to cultivate your own daily practice in a supportive environment.
For interested students, this course counts for four weeks of the IDP's 40-week Buddhist Studies certification program. More info about the program is available here.
About the Teachers
Nandini Naik is from Bombay, India. Her first taste of meditation was when she was a little girl, but it wasn't until her BA in Theatre and Religion at Colby College that her appetite for the study of Buddhism and the practice of Zen was whet. After graduating, she traveled to Dharamsala where she learnt about the Tibetan people's plight. Their stories, strength and spirit deeply inspired her. At NYU for her MA in Education, she wrote a play about the Tibetan situation entitled Turbulent Tibet. The happy synchronicity that emerged during the production of this play was her introduction to the IDP (InterDependence Project). Since, she has graduated from the Buddhist Studies and Teacher Training Program there. Nandini is a full-time public school teacher in Manhattan. She is infinitely grateful to her family, her teachers, and the teachings she receives on the way.
A lifelong dancer and a yogi for years, Kate Johnson finally learned to sit still at The Interdependence Project, where she will complete a meditation teacher training in December 2011. Kate is a student in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition, and is currently also completing a Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation teacher training at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. Kate earned her first yoga teaching certificate from Laughing Lotus in 2006, and now teaches yoga at Third Root Community Health Center, a holistic healthcare cooperative she joined as a co-owner in July 2011. She also teaches yoga and mindfulness meditation to high school students in public schools throughout NYC.
