Paramita is Sanskrit for perfection. In Tibetan, it is to "cross over to the other shore." The paramitas, then, are the qualities that lead one from the sea of sufferings to realm of enlightenment, Nirvana.
In Buddhism, there are six paramitas to practice: generosity, ethics, patience, joyous effort, meditation, and wisdom. In this course, we will examine each quality and discuss what it means to cultivate these qualities in our everyday lives. In the words of Ngawan Drolma, "the paramitas are the very essence of our true nature." We seek to get familiar with the essential.
Nandini Naik is a graduate from the Secular Buddhist Teacher Training Program at the IDP (Interdependence Project). She is a full-time teacher at a public school in Manhattan. She is infinitely grateful to her family, her teachers, her students and the teachings she receives on the way.
Having practiced meditation since 2002, Tokyo-born journalist Maho Kawachi completed her first IDP teacher training in 2011 and continues to study with Shastri Ethan Nichtern. She's aided and hindered in her search for enlightenment by her two lovely dogs and her equally lovely husband.
