The IDP Prison Project Group

with Michael Carey

The United States incarcerates more people than any country in the world -- more than China, more than India, more than the 26 largest European populations combined. The US also incarcerates people at a greater rate than any other country – greater than Iran, Cuba or South Africa. There are more than 2,319,000 people in jails or prisons in the US.

Recently the incarceration rate topped 1 in 100 for the first time. The prison population has tripled over the last twenty years. When those on parole or probation are added to this number, it swells to more than 7.3 million, or 1 in 31 U.S. adults, according to The Pew Center on the States

In light of this, the Interdependence Project is launching the Prison Project. This project will combine direct service volunteer work in partnership with the College Initiative, a non-profit re-entry education program that works with formerly incarcerated people who wish to pursue higher education, with activist and contemplative work on incarceration.
