Ethan Nichtern and Dr. Miles Neale will begin a series of lectures and teachings that introduce and explore various key themes from the perspective of their trainings in Buddhist philosophy and contemplative psychotherapy, respectively. Ethan will represent the major Buddhist philosophical traditions through textual scholarship and years of teaching meditation, while Miles will represent contemplative psychotherapy through the major Western psychological traditions as well as case examples from his clinical work. They will alternate each week in presenting a topic, leading group discussion and meditation practice, and identifying common and contrasting elements to their viewpoints. These dialogs are designed to foster mutual appreciation for the relative nature of how phenomenon are perceived, experienced and articulated via the lenses of a particular discipline.

The first two weeks will explore the often-misunderstood concept of self/selflessness and the second two weeks will explore the ever important concept of karma. This first set of dialogues will culminate with a full weekend meditation retreat, to allow for a deepening of these insights into one’s experience. It is recommended to do both the four week series and the weekend retreat, but they can also be done separately.
