The full study of Buddhism requires inquiry into our view of our selves, our experience, and reality itself. Over the course of 2500 years, the philosophical tradition has developed a variety of approaches for deepening our understanding of reality itself. This course will offer an overview of the Atomist, Sutric, Middle Way, and Mind Only approaches to relative and ultimate truth. Never intended to be abstract philosophy, we will view the approaches of these schools as psychological tools for seeing how we see ultimate truth moment by moment, as well as how our habitual deceptions ( so-called “wrong views”) make their way into our thoughts, emotions, actions and culture.

For interested students, this course counts for six weeks of the 40 week Buddhist Studies certification program.

Note:  this is the main class series Ethan Nichtern will be teaching at IDP this fall.

is this very different from the recent Madhyamaka class?

i do believe it will be different as the middle way class really delved deeply into one particular buddhist perspective from what i recall of the course discription. but frankly i'm not completely sure, i would email ethan with any concerns.
