This course is a great way to develop one's knowledge of Buddhism's amazing array of philosophies, morality, and practical life lessons. It will focus on one of the most core teachings of the Buddhism, "The Eight Fold Path." Together, the group will explore these teachings and practices as told from a variety of traditions and perspectives.
Each week there will be assigned readings and homework that the group will be expected to complete before class. This course will also serve as a support for you to develop and sustain a daily meditation practice.
For interested students, this course counts for six weeks of the IDP's 40-week Buddhist Studies certification program.
About the teachers:
Seth Freedman is a student in the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. He has studied extensively in the Shambhala and Interdependence Project's Buddhist curriculums and is currently enrolled in the Zen Contemplative Care Buddhist Chaplaincy program at Beth Israel Hospital.
A lifelong dancer and a yogi for years, Kate Johnson finally learned to sit still at The Interdependence Project, where she will complete a meditation teacher training in December 2011. Kate is a student in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition, and is currently also completing a Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation teacher training at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. Kate earned her first yoga teaching certificate from Laughing Lotus in 2006, and now teaches yoga at Third Root Community Health Center (www.thirdroot.org), a holistic healthcare cooperative she joined as a co-owner in July 2011. She also teaches yoga and mindfulness meditation to high school students in public schools throughout NYC.
